What a slow staffing decision costs

A project waiting for a person is a project not billing. Work out how many hours sit unbooked while staffing requests wait for an answer.

Work it out with your numbers

The figures below are a worked example. Change any of them: nothing you type is sent or stored.

What it comes to

Billable value waiting per month
9 600 €
Billable hours waiting per month
120 h

How the figure is calculated

In words
Multiply the requests by the working days each one waits, the hours in a day and the share of the week requested, then value those hours at the billing rate.
In symbols
  • Billable value waiting per month = N × D × h × S × R
  • Billable hours waiting per month = N × D × h × S
With your numbers
  • 6 × 5 × 8 h × 50% = 120 h
  • 120 h × 80 € = 9 600 €

Assumptions

  • This counts hours delayed, not lost: some come back later in the project, some do not.
  • Use the working days from the request to the decision, not to the start date the request asks for.

How Flowtly measures this

  1. 1Each project opens into the roles it needs, and an unfilled role shows as a gap from the week it opens.Read the guide
  2. 2A project manager requests a person for a role with a share, a period and a note. The approver sees whether approving would push anyone over capacity.Read the guide
  3. 3The approver works from Pending and Conflicts and approves as requested, approves at a lower share, or declines with a reason.
